From thought-provoking plays to enchanting musicals, here are three can’t-miss events happening at The Wallis in 2019

Located in Beverly Hills, The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (often simply called “The Wallis”) is a community arts center that was named for philanthropist Wallis Annenberg. Every year, the venue releases a roster of world-class theatre, music, and dance performances. Some of the events are offered for free, while others require a ticket. Members of The Wallis receive savings and special perks on many shows and events. Read on for a list of some of the most anticipated shows of the season.

Identity: The Musical

From May 24th to 26th, The Wallis and The Miracle Project (a theatre, film, and expressive arts program for individuals with autism and other disabilities) are presenting a story about a “seemingly ‘perfect’ world of the future in which data dictates your identity—everything from careers to marital status.”

The musical show is set in a world without any pollution, crime, poverty—or self-determination. The show was inspired by conversations with Miracle Project participants with and without autism who discussed how developmental disabilities and differences can seemingly serve to limit one’s role in society.

As a commentary on this, the show envisions a world where everyone’s future is predetermined by data collected from the time of their birth. As some of the young adults express a desire for individuality, the futuristic society is forced to grapple with what the idea of perfection means.

The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

In 1978, Douglas Adams created this now-famous show as a radio play. The show’s quick, ironic wit made it a hit--and it is now coming to The Wallis. Back by popular demand, theatre lovers can see The Wallis Studio Ensemble’s take on the classic presentation from June 6th to 9th.

In 2018, The Los Angeles Times named the performance a “Pick of the Week.” This year’s performances are sure to be just as inspired. Attendees are invited to come decked out in their best science fiction attire and take photos at the designated selfie spot. A winner for best costume will subsequently be announced and receive two complimentary tickets to a future show at The Wallis.

National Sawdust at The Wallis

On May 30th, cellist Amanda Gookin will be performing works by seven female composers that highlight the issues facing today’s modern women. On May 31st, The Wallis will showcase five multimedia works for solo cello, allowing the audience to connect with and contemplate the challenges and privileges of women. After the second performance, attendees will have the chance to attend a post-show talk with the artists moderated by Classic KUSC’s Brian Lauritzen.
